Saturday, June 18th, 2011: Nashville, TN to Kansas City, MO
Throughout the trip, we decided to keep a very loose schedule, so after we left Nashville, we really didn’t know where we were going to sleep that nite until we were on the road. There was some talk of heading up to Chicago (“Big Fan!”), but that quickly died out once we saw how far it would’ve taken us off course, so we decided to hit St. Louis instead, primarily to see the St. Louis Arch. To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled at the idea, but my Aunt Valerie had visited before and insisted it was worth a look; a huge understatement!
It was probably a combination of things, the weather, my hangover (finally) clearing up, the sight of the great Mississippi river, I don’t know exactly, but St. Louis was a real pleasant surprise for all of us. It had the feel of an ‘old school,’ midwest, big city; something you might see in an old mafia film. Unfortunately, we didn’t stay long, because we made up our mind to settle in Kansas City for the nite.
By the time we got to K.C., we’d all pretty much had it; I know I was exhausted.
If we all hadn’t been so hungry, I think we would’ve been perfectly content to stay in the hotel, but we needed something to eat, so we hit the town first. It was a Saturday nite in a midsize, Midwest city and it was really bustling! I don’t know what I was expecting, it being my first time in K.C., but I can assure you it wasn’t what we found. The streets were singing…people were partying everywhere, but especially in “The Light District,” where there are a number of bars, restaurants and outdoor, live music performers. It really did look like fun and I think John and I both wanted to test the waters, but it was not to be…we were just too worn out from the nite before and the long drive from Nashville.
After an overpriced dinner we went back to the hotel for some much needed sleep. Sometimes it’s difficult to sleep in the same room with your buddies; this wasn’t one of those times.
Next up….K.C. to Vail, Colorado!
